A layoff announcement can be a starting point for recruiting research. It is not a list of people who are available to hire. Review the company event, the role you need to fill, and each person’s current situation separately.
Define the hiring need first
Write down the role, level, skills, and location requirements before reviewing people. This keeps the search focused on fit instead of assuming everyone associated with a company is a suitable prospect.
Read the event in context
Check whether an announcement describes a partial reduction or a shutdown, which business areas it covers, and when it happened. A reported company headcount cannot tell you which individuals were affected. People in the same company or location may have different circumstances.
Check each person’s current profile
Review their role, experience, and current employment information. Do not assume someone was laid off or is open to a new role because they worked at the company. If their situation is unclear, keep it unclear rather than presenting it as a fact.
Make contact relevant and respectful
Explain the specific role and why the person’s experience appears relevant. Avoid opening with an assumption about their job loss. Let them decide whether to engage, and respect a decline or request not to be contacted.
